Lay turf from September to November or March to May when soil is warm but weather is cooler. Avoid summer heat and winter frost. Turf should be laid within 24 hours of delivery for best results.

Remove weeds and debris, then rotovate soil to 150mm depth. Add organic matter and level carefully. Firm gently and rake to fine tilth. Test pH - most grasses prefer 6.0-7.0. Allow soil to settle before laying turf.

Spring: Apply high-nitrogen fertiliser in March-April. Summer: Use slow-release fertiliser if needed. Autumn: Apply autumn lawn feed with potassium in September-October. Avoid feeding in winter or during drought.

Moss: Improve drainage and reduce shade. Fairy rings: Spike and water affected areas. Thatch: Scarify annually in autumn. Compaction: Aerate with hollow tines. Bare patches: Overseed in spring or autumn.

Spring: Start mowing when grass begins growing, gradually reduce height. Summer: Mow weekly, leave longer in dry spells. Autumn: Continue mowing until growth stops. Winter: Only mow if mild and grass is growing.

Lay turf in a brick-bond pattern, staggering joints like brickwork. This prevents weak lines and creates a stronger lawn. Start with a straight edge and work systematically across the area.

Use wooden planks to walk on when laying turf to distribute weight evenly and avoid creating depressions. This also helps you reach across the area without stepping on newly prepared soil.

Use a sharp knife or half-moon edging tool to cut turf to fit. Cut from the grass side, not the soil side, for cleaner edges. Keep the blade sharp and clean for best results.

Use a light roller (not too heavy) to firm turf after laying. Roll across the grain first, then with the grain. This ensures good soil contact without over-compacting. Water thoroughly after rolling.

For patchy lawns, overseed in autumn with a seed mix matching your existing grass. Rake lightly, scatter seed, then rake again. Cover with a thin layer of compost and keep moist until germination.
