Ensure 150mm minimum clearance under decking for airflow. Install adequate drainage and slope the deck away from buildings. Use spacers between boards for water drainage and air circulation to prevent rot.

Spring: Power wash and check for loose boards. Summer: Apply decking oil or stain. Autumn: Clear leaves and debris regularly. Winter: Check for ice damage and ensure drainage is clear. Replace damaged boards promptly.

Choose grooved or textured decking boards for better grip. Apply anti-slip treatments annually. Keep decks clean of algae and moss. Install adequate lighting for evening use and consider non-slip strips on steps.

Decks over 300mm high need building regulations approval. Ensure proper foundations and structural support. Balustrades must be 1100mm high minimum. Always check with local building control before starting major decking projects.

Use hidden deck fasteners or clips to avoid visible screws on the surface. This creates a cleaner look and prevents water pooling around screw heads, which can cause staining and rot over time.

Use a chalk line to mark joist positions on multiple boards at once before cutting. This ensures consistent spacing and saves time. Mark the waste side of cuts to avoid confusion during installation.

Use 6mm spacers (like old credit cards) between deck boards for consistent gaps. This allows for expansion and drainage while maintaining a professional appearance. Remove spacers before screwing down.

Always pre-drill screw holes near board ends to prevent splitting, especially with hardwood. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Countersink screws slightly below the surface.

Use temporary cleats screwed to joists to support long deck boards during installation. This prevents sagging and makes it easier to align boards properly. Remove cleats after permanent fixing.
