Pressure-treated timber lasts longest in UK weather. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant but more expensive. Composite fencing requires less maintenance. Always use galvanised or stainless steel fixings to prevent rust staining.

Spring: Check for winter damage and loose panels. Summer: Clean and treat with preservative. Autumn: Clear vegetation and check drainage. Winter: Inspect after storms and secure loose elements promptly.

Use a string line and spirit level between corner posts to ensure perfect alignment. For long runs, use intermediate posts as guides. A laser level makes this even easier for professional-looking results.

Use heavy-duty cable ties as a temporary fix for broken fence panels or loose sections. They're weather-resistant and can hold panels securely until permanent repairs can be made. Choose UV-resistant black ties.

Use postcrete (rapid-setting concrete) that doesn't need mixing with water - just add to the hole around the post and water in. Sets in 10 minutes and is ready to take weight in 40 minutes, perfect for UK weather.

Use a car jack or pry bar to lift heavy fence panels into position. Place blocks under the panel to maintain height while securing. This prevents back strain and ensures panels are level.

Install every third panel with a small gap at the bottom or use hit-and-miss boarding to reduce wind load. This prevents panels from acting like sails in strong winds, reducing storm damage significantly.
