Block paving is popular and repairable but needs regular maintenance. Concrete is durable and low-maintenance. Natural stone looks premium but can be slippery when wet. Consider your budget, maintenance time, and local planning requirements.

A solid sub-base is crucial for long-lasting paving. Use MOT Type 1 aggregate, compact in layers, and ensure proper drainage. The sub-base should be 100-150mm deep for pedestrian areas, 200-300mm for driveways.

Driveways over 5m² need planning permission unless using permeable materials. Install proper drainage to prevent water running onto public highways. Consider soakaways or connection to existing drainage systems.

Use polymeric sand for joints as it hardens when wet and prevents weed growth. Install weed membrane under sub-base. Regular maintenance with weed killer or pressure washing keeps joints clean and prevents plant establishment.

Spring: Pressure wash and re-sand joints. Summer: Treat oil stains promptly and check for loose blocks. Autumn: Clear leaves to prevent staining. Winter: Use rock salt carefully to avoid damage, never use table salt.

Use a tight string line as a cutting guide for straight edges. Mark the cutting line with chalk or pencil, then use an angle grinder with a diamond blade. This ensures perfectly straight, professional-looking edges.

Use a rubber mallet and wooden block to level paving slabs without damage. The block distributes the force evenly, preventing cracks. Tap gently and check levels frequently with a spirit level.

Mix mortar to a "wet sand" consistency - it should hold together when squeezed but not be sloppy. Use a 1:4 cement to sharp sand ratio. Add plasticiser for workability and frost resistance.

Start laying from a straight edge (like a house wall) and work outwards. Use a herringbone pattern for driveways as it's strongest. Plan your pattern to minimise cutting and waste - draw it out first.

Use a plate compactor with a rubber mat to avoid damaging paving surfaces. Make multiple passes in different directions. This beds the blocks into the sand and creates a solid, level surface.
