Artificial Lawn Installation

Look for UV-resistant artificial grass with good drainage backing. Choose pile heights of 30-40mm for realistic appearance. Ensure it has anti-bacterial treatment and is lead-free. Quality grass should come with 8-10 year warranties.

Remove existing turf and 75-100mm of soil. Install MOT Type 1 sub-base, compact well, then add sharp sand layer. Ensure proper drainage with falls away from buildings. Use weed membrane to prevent growth through.

Monthly: Remove debris and leaves. Quarterly: Brush against the grain to maintain pile. Annually: Deep clean with specialist cleaner. Remove pet waste immediately and rinse area. Check edges and re-secure if needed.

Install additional drainage layer for pet areas. Use enzyme-based cleaners monthly to break down odours. Rinse regularly with water. For heavy pet use, consider artificial grass specifically designed for pets with enhanced drainage.

Choose lighter coloured grass to reduce heat absorption. Install in shaded areas where possible. Use cooling infill products in sunny locations. Water the surface on very hot days to reduce temperature and refresh appearance.

When joining artificial grass, ensure pile direction matches and use proper joining tape and adhesive. Cut through both pieces simultaneously for perfect alignment. Brush seams after installation to blend fibres.

Use a nail gun with galvanised nails every 150mm around edges for quick, secure fixing. Ensure nails are driven flush with backing. This is much faster than screwing and provides excellent hold.

Use a drop spreader or broadcast spreader for even sand infill distribution. Work the sand in with a stiff brush, then use a leaf blower to remove excess. This creates a more natural feel and appearance.

Always cut from the backing side using a sharp Stanley knife. Follow the stitch lines for straight cuts. Replace blades frequently as artificial grass backing can dull them quickly. Use a straight edge for guidance.

Use a power brush or stiff broom against the pile direction to restore flattened areas. This is especially effective after heavy use or furniture placement. Regular brushing maintains the grass's natural appearance.
